Specific conditions that may be helped by this therapeutic procedure include herniated or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, facet syndrome, spondylosis or even failed spinal surgery. Many patients, some with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-documented disc herniations, have achieved "good" to "excellent" results after spinal decompression therapy.
Doctor skill and the computerized traction head on the decompression table or machine are key to the therapy's effectiveness. Proper assessment, correct positioning and the use of programmed patterns of distraction and relaxation may reduce disc pressure, allowing necessary nutrients to enliven and accelerate disc healing.
During the procedure, by cycling through distraction and relaxation phases and by proper positioning, a spinal disc can be placed under negative pressure, causing a vacuum effect within it.The vacuum effect may allow the disc component — that has protruded or herniated outside the normal confines of the disc — to be pulled back toward the center of the disc.As a result, the adjacent impinged nerve may be decompressed.
To reduce inflammation and assist the healing process, supporting structures can be treated with passive therapies, chiropractic adjustments (when indicated) and/or active rehabilitation in order to strengthen the spinal musculature.
The specific treatment plan is determined by the doctor after an examination. If you're suffering from a herniated disc and other treatments have not yielded sufficient benefit, you should find out if you might be a candidate for spinal decompression therapy.
